The “best” GPS telemetry app depends on the job: lap times on a circuit, or daily driving tracking. OpenRank is built for the second — iPhone and Android, free — not to replace Racechrono on a track day.
Two families of tools
| Track apps | OpenRank | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Lap times, sectors | Trips, pace, community |
| Price | Often subscription / in-app | Free |
| Navigation / cameras | Rare | Yes (fixed cameras) |
| Rankings, clubs | Sometimes | Yes |
| GPS privacy | Varies | Only during the trip you start |
What matters for a daily enthusiast
- Speed, acceleration, estimated consumption during the trip.
- History with a map trace — to replay an A-road, not only a time.
- Being able to compare without paying €10/month.
- A nav you can use at the weekend, with fixed speed-camera alerts (legal in France as information on approach).
That is OpenRank’s scope. To time a 0–100, follow this protocol; for models, the 0–100 spec sheets.
iPhone vs Android
Both platforms expose the phone GNSS. Accuracy gaps come from the place and the fix, not from “Android being more precise”. Install the official app: App Store or Google Play.
